Six Frames

In his book, Six Frames, Edward De Bono has laid out strong symbols of the six shapes that allows us to be more deliberate about the way we choose to look at information. We can consciously prepare our mind to notice different aspects of the information. This enables us to get far more value from the information.
The Six Frames provide a method for extracting more value than from the information. They are therefore as important as the information itself. Having frames for thinking about information means that with each frame the mind is prepared & sensitized to notice different things. Each frame prepares the mind to look at the information in a specific way.

The First Frame is the Triangle which stands for Purpose -
The purpose of this frame is to emphasize the huge importance of being clear & laying out the exact basis of your need for information & your interaction with the information.

The Second Frame is the Circle which stands for Accuracy -
The Circle frame can be used to pinpoint the importance of some piece of information & the need to check it out. It can be used to indicate an area of existing doubt & to let others know about this doubt and to judge the accuracy of information sources.

The Third Frame is the Square which stands for Point Of View -
The Square frame is really asking us to pay attention to the degree of bias or neutrality in the information. Is the information objective or subjective? We may not be able to do much about it but noticing the bias can affect the way we use the information. We may also choose not to use a source that is consistently one-sided. It also suggests that we ourselves can choose to look at the information in a different way.

The Fourth Frame is the Heart which stands for Interest -
The purpose of the Heart frame is to encourage people to make more effort to note matters of interest when these are not quite so obvious. You can call it "reading between the lines."

The Fifth Frame is the Diamond which stands for Value -
This frame is a sort of summary & overview. "What has been the value of this information?"

The Sixth Frame is the Slab which stands for Outcome -
The Slab frame is for the outcome & conclusion. It requires a deliberate effort to lay out the conclusion on the slab for yourself and others to see. It is no longer enough to assume that everyone faced with the same information comes to the same conclusion. There is a need to to spell out the conclusion in a clear & delberate manner. To do this, we have to think about it. That is what matters.

The frames discussed above can be very useful for anyone who wants to research over anything from buying a house, car, shares, etc. They can also be used as a language code between two people or in a group discussion. They provide a simple shorthand for directing attention or suggesting that attention may be directed to one particular aspect of the information.
A very strategic way of analyzing information, the frames will make things easier for you for whatever purpose the information is being used for. Try it.
